When The Buggles “Video Killed the Radio Star” played as the first video on MTV in 1981, the way we listened to music changed forever. 40 years later, we are on the cusp of another visual music explosion with the beta release of a new series of augmented reality videos, “Popins”. On Thursday, June 10th, the genesis project from Popins dropped, an AR performance of Alec Shaw’s “Nobody But You” as an NFT on Rarible, selling out all available NFTs within 24 hours. Alec is a Seattle based 21-year-old singer/songwriter. He is a member of Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy award winner Common’s artist incubator and accelerator The Stardust Kids. Common has described his joy at working with these up-and-coming artists this way, “the raw talent and initiative these artists have shown is inspiring. It means a lot that I’m able to have the slightest hand in showcasing all the incredible things this next generation has to offer.” But listen for yourself as he talks about how exciting it is to see Alec debuting our new product. Alec’s talent shines in this unique and live one-take version of his new song “Nobody But You”, the first song from his upcoming new album. Celebrating Seattle’s rich history in music and technical innovation, Popins will release 3 additional AR videos from Seattle based artists as NFTs in the coming weeks before branching out to both other artists and other performance media such as comedy, dance and so much more.
